QR Codes and Short Links: The Perfect Pair for Physical and Digital

Generate QR codes directly from your URLW short links. Track scans, update destinations without reprinting, and use QR codes for flyers, menus, events, and more.

QR codes have completed a remarkable rehabilitation. Once dismissed as a failed nineties technology, they are now ubiquitous — restaurant menus, product packaging, event signage, business cards, and even television advertisements. The reason for their revival is simple: smartphones can scan them effortlessly without a separate app, and they bridge the physical and digital worlds with a single gesture. When you generate QR codes from URLW short links rather than raw URLs, you add a layer of intelligence and flexibility that raw URL QR codes cannot match.

The Core Advantage: Updatable Destination

A QR code generated directly from a long URL is static. The URL is baked into the QR code's data — change the URL and you must reprint the QR code. This makes raw URL QR codes a liability for any use case where the destination might change: seasonal menus, event registration pages, product download pages, promotional campaign landing pages.

A QR code generated from a URLW short link points to the short link URL, which never changes. The destination the short link points to can be updated at any time in your URLW dashboard without touching the QR code. You can reprint menus for seasonal updates without generating new QR codes. You can keep the same QR code on a product for years, updating the destination URL as your product pages evolve.

Generating QR Codes in URLW

QR code generation is available on URLW Pro and higher plans. The process is straightforward:

  1. Create or open an existing short link in your URLW dashboard
  2. Click the QR Code button in the link detail view
  3. Choose your preferred format: PNG (for digital use), SVG (for print — scales to any size without pixelation), or PDF
  4. Optionally configure size and error correction level (use High correction for links that will be printed at small sizes or on textured surfaces)
  5. Download the file and use it in your designs

SVG format is strongly recommended for any print use. Unlike PNG, an SVG QR code can be scaled to any size in your design software without quality loss — from a tiny business card icon to a large-format banner.

Tracking QR Code Scans

Because your QR code points to a URLW short link, every scan generates a click tracked in your URLW analytics. You can see how many times your QR code was scanned, when, from which countries, and on which device types — giving you real performance data on physical marketing assets that are traditionally impossible to measure.

Use UTM parameters on the destination URL to distinguish QR code traffic from other sources in your analytics platform: set utm_medium=qr and utm_source to describe the physical location (e.g., restaurant-menu, trade-show-stand-a, business-card).

High-Impact Use Cases

  • Restaurant menus: Replace static PDF menus with a QR code linking to an updatable online menu. Update prices and dishes without reprinting.
  • Event registration: Add a QR code to printed event materials that links to the registration page. Track how many attendees scanned the physical materials vs. registering via digital channels.
  • Product packaging: Link to product pages, user guides, or support resources. Update the destination when you revise documentation without changing packaging.
  • Business cards: Add a QR code linking to your LinkedIn profile, portfolio, or a digital business card. Update the destination anytime your contact information changes.
  • In-store promotions: Add QR codes to shelf tags or posters linking to promotional landing pages. Track engagement from specific store locations by using location-specific short links.

Design Considerations for Print QR Codes

A QR code that does not scan reliably is worse than no QR code. Follow these guidelines for print applications:

  • Minimum printed size: 2cm × 2cm for standard scanning distance. Larger is always better.
  • Use the highest error correction level when adding logos or design elements inside the QR code.
  • Maintain strong contrast between the QR code modules and background. Black on white is optimal; other high-contrast color combinations can work but test them thoroughly.
  • Leave a clear quiet zone (white border) of at least 4 module widths around the QR code. Do not let other design elements crowd the edges.
